Imperial Stout

Kegged on November 14, 2009.

I'm a big fan of dark beers, so I was excited to brew this one. I again found this recipe at Bob's Homebrew Supply. Below is an image that shows the ingredients and directions for making the beer (click on the image for a larger view).

I followed the instructions pretty close, although my steeping temperature went a little higher than the range specified above. I don't remember what yeast I used. The image below shows the beer in a carboy.

The original gravity was 1.073. The beer was in the primary container for five days, followed by 12 days in a secondary container, for a total of 17 days. In my notes I have a specific gravity reading of 1.026 (not corrected for temperature); I'm not sure if this was taken during the transfer to the secondary or if it was taken when the beer was kegged. With this reading the alcohol content would be 6.2%.

I was very pleased with how this beer turned out. The only issue was, just like the IPA, I should have left this beer in the secondary container for longer; there was a slightly noticeable amount of suspended yeast.
